Filtering Out Colours
I had this idea whilst watching the TV yesterday, and saw a similiar effect on a bank advertisement. It was actaully on the R. Kelly video "World's Greatest" on VH1.. But let's pretend I don't watch VH1.. or R. Kelly.. I tried to keep the 'boxer' theme though... It was quite difficult to find a coloured picture of R. Kelly in his 'Boxing Robe' -- So, I had to make do with a boxer Girl. Let's start by opening the image up in Photoshop. Click Layer > New > Layer from background - which unlocks the layer. (You don't need to do this if you've just pasted it in) We want to add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer. Adjustment layers are able to influence the layers below it, without directly editing them perminantely. Go, on your layers palate, go ahead and click the Adjustment Layers button, and then Hue/Saturation ![]() We make to turn our photograph into black and white, so.. let's take away the saturation by dragging the saturation slider all the way to the left, and hit OK. ![]() This has created a layer mask. Basically, all you have to remember is that black will hide the layer.. and white will show it. Take one of your paintbrushes, mine was around 75px with 100% hardness. Reset your colours by clicking D on your keyboard. You're all set to start showing and hiding. First.. swap your colours around by hitting X on your keyboard, so black is your foreground colour. Now, if you paint a bit of the image that you want to be red.. such as the glove.. you will see that that part of the adjustment layer is hidden.. and the image from below shows through. ![]() It's a tedious process. But now, you just need to start painting away, showing the red parts of your boxer. Don't worry about making a mistake.. just hit X on your keyboard away, which makes it black and white when you paint again ![]() ![]() |
