Resolution averaged 1,675 lines, which is great for a 7.1MP camera. Bootup time is a decent 2.8 seconds, but that is a lot slower than the SD550's 1.6 seconds. The 3.7-second recycle time is slow for an ultracompact, and nowhere near as fast as the SD550's 2.5 seconds. I found no pincushion distortion, and just a touch of the usual barrel distortion. Unfortunately, there is noticeable shutter lag.

Image quality was generally good, with good colour, contrast, and detail, although images were slightly soft, and saturation was slightly lower than I would have liked to see (this can be increased by using some of the scene modes), as a comparison the Olympus SP-320 had higher saturation on default settings. Images had generally low noise, at most ISO settings upto ISO200. Images were slightly soft straight from the camera and could benefit from sharpening. The camera did a good job focusing the majority of the time - and indoor group photos were surprisingly well lit despite the cameras compact size and compact flash.

Image quality is a mixed bag, you can get some excellent results by shooting RAW and converting, unfortunately the camera's internal processor appears to be the same as the E-300 / E-500 (with a little tweaking) which means a more 'consumer like' appearance to JPEG images and pretty unsophisticated noise reduction, ISO 1600 is so soft as to render many of those 7.4 megapixels unused. Color was good, tonal response was good and dynamic range just where we expected it to be. We just expected more.

At its best, the SP-510UZ can capture images with abundant detail and accurate-looking, well-saturated colors, with only very minor JPEG artifacting and little or no fringing. The camera's automatic white balance did an admirable job of serving up neutral colors under our lab's tungsten lights. Interestingly, the tungsten preset was less neutral, with a slight bluish-green cast. So, you may as well stick with auto white balance when shooting indoors or outdoors, where it did just as good a job at producing neutral colors when shooting in natural daylight.

The Olympus FE-180 is a fine, inexpensive snapshot camera. It doesn't have any manual settings to play with, but it quickly and easily produces attractive images for a low price. With an included set of rechargeable batteries and a charger, this sub-$200 shooter is a great deal for anyone who wants pretty pictures without a lot of trouble or cost.
