i am starting up a photography business. i am not the photographer but my girlfriend is and has been for the last ten years. she is excellent at her job and we decided to start up and go out on our own. you dont make money for workinf for somebody as we know. any advise would be great.

Make sure that your business is setup properly and that you have processes in place, as far as payment goes, books and accounting and advertising as well. Other than this you can run the business from an office or a home for that fact. Good luck.

What kind of photography will you be doing?

I wonder if someone who was having a slow time in the field of portraits or head shots could make some money in stock photography, marketing images online.

There isn't an awful a lot of money in Photography unless you are doing the right kind. What type of photography does she do? I've always wanted to do Film set photography or Food photography for large brands. With 10 years under the belt I guess she is pretty good.

There are several stock sites online that pay their photographers pretty well and a good photographer could easily supplement their income to some degree if they can get the right shots. Depending on the type of photography she does you could also design items to sell imprinted with the pictures such as shirts, mugs, etc from a site such as cafe press.

Otherwise good advertising, professional turnout, and quick time from taking to proofing are key. People want to be able to have pictures of their wedding taken and view the proofs online during their honeymoon and have them printed and waiting before they get back these days.

Food photography has always looked fun, but there are so many things to think about when doing so and only so much time to do them in before some foods can't be used.

Just my opinion, but I think the first step would be to set up a diverse portfolio with different types of photos in it and try to get an idea of what your clients will be like and how many. You may find that there just isn't need for another photographer where you are, and at least you would find out before spending all the money to try to start the business.

How good is she with babies and children? My experience with taking my daughter for photographs is shocking. The people there just have no clue how to make a young child smile or interact with them. They just do not bring the best out of children.

So if she is good with kids then this might be a very profitable way to go-there will always be parents wanting to show off their children.
